• How To Prep Your Pool For a Hurricane

Living in Florida means being prepared for the worst when it comes to storms and hurricanes. If a big storm is coming, the last thing you want to do is worry about what to do with your swimming pool! Here are some tips from Navarre Pool Service you can use for pool hurricane preparation.

    Before the storm

    1. Do not empty your pool or lower the water level in your pool. It is not necessary to drain water from your swimming pool as properly built pools should be equipped with overflows for excess water.
    2. Turn off all electrical power to your pool equipment at the breaker. Install a generator for emergencies if you haven’t done so.
    3. Remove all loose items from the swimming area that could become hazardous. All patio furniture, toys, and pool maintenance equipment should be safe and secured. Do not throw any patio furniture into the pool.
    4. Super chlorinate (shock) your pool if you have the supplies. This will help prevent algae from forming in your pool. The pool water could then be used for washing or flushing toilets if supplies should fail.

    After the storm

    1. You do not want to empty your pool, even if your pool is full of debris. High ground water levels, after the storm, could cause structural damage – wait until water levels lower back to normal.
    2. Remove debris from inside the pool as much as possible. Again, chlorinate (shock) your swimming pool and run the filter until the water becomes clear.
    3. Inspect your pool pump and motor for any damage. Let the motor dry for at least 24 hours. If you couldn’t remove your equipment before the storm and it was underwater, get it checked out by a professional! When electricity has returned, call Splash Pools to thoroughly inspect your pool and equipment. Look for signs of water intrusion, broken pipes, cracks in filter, etc. If you have any doubt please call us before turning on the power!
    4. Be aware! Some chlorine feeders need special care to restart. Splash Pools will respond as soon as possible to assist you after the storm.
