• How To Prepare Your Pool For A Storm

Owning a pool is very enjoyable most of the time.  There are some small steps you should take if you know a storm is approaching. In most cases a storm should not be a major cause for loads of stress when it comes to your pool’s health. By remembering these few simple steps you should be able to secure your pool and avoid any potential damage from upcoming storms.

Preparing Your Pool Before A Storm

If you know a storm is approaching there are a couple things we recommend for you to keep in mind to secure your pool:

Furniture: If strong winds are headed toward you it is a good idea to move any pool or patio furniture that could potentially damage your pool or house. This includes floating pool toys, chairs and umbrellas.

Water Level: Check the water level of your pool. Is it at the normal level? If so, great; leave the water as is. Your pool most likely has overflows built in which means excess water should be able to safely drain off. You should NOT drain your pool before a storm. The water in your pool acts as a defense against debris from the storm which could damage your pool’s finish. Also, draining too much water from the pool can lead to your pool floating up from the ground and nobody needs that!

Equipment: Shut off the power to any electric pool equipment such as your pool pump, motor and lights. To protect your equipment and cleaning supplies from the risk of a flood, move everything indoors where it can stay high and dry until the storm passes. If time allows, remove any other loose pool equipment before the storm arrives.

Maintaining Your Pool After A Storm

After the storm has subsided there are a few ways to address the health of your swimming pool:

Check the equipment: Ensure that your pool motor and pump(s) were not submerged in water,  are  undamaged and working properly. If the electronics got wet during the storm have a Professional Pool Company inspect the equipment to determine if repairs or replacements will be necessary.

Remove any debris: Using a rake, net or skimmer, carefully remove any large debris that may have entered your pool during the storm. Do not use your pool pump for this task; big objects will cause it to clog.

Add chemicals: Once the debris has been removed and all the equipment is returned to the pool area, it is advisable to shock the water to counteract rainfall and other contaminants.
