Who doesn’t love taking a dip to cool off! It wouldn’t feel like summer without frequent trips to the beach, river or pool (or all three)!
Swimming is a great way to connect and spend time with family but before you take that dive make sure you know these important swim safety tips!
They’ll help keep your loved ones safe and ensure that your days in the sun stay great.
We know this seems like a no-brainer but it’s easy to get distracted when you’re out on the water with your kids, especially if you’re socializing in a group.
To ensure that there is always at least one pair of adult eyes on the kiddos, it’s a good idea to designate an adult or parent to be “on duty” to keep track of the kids until their turn is over and the next parent can take on the responsibility. Or just stay together!
Even if your kids are great swimmers, a pool full of large flotation devices and other items can prove hazardous!
If your family is swimming in an area with a lot of rafts, warn your kids about their presence and teach them to steer clear so they don’t get trapped underwater. Accidents happen!
Most diving accidents don’t even involve a diving board. They actually occur when the swimmer misjudges the depth of the water and hit their head on the side or bottom of the pool!
Teach your kids that the only safe way to enter the pool is at the steps or the ladder. Running around the pool and diving is not allowed.
When you’re swimming in the cool water all day long it’s easy to forget that you’re also losing fluids!
Remember to drink water throughout the day and tell your kids to do the same. Dehydration can lead to headaches, cramps and even more serious things like illness and death!
Before spending the day outside or leaving home, make sure to lather the whole family in sunscreen and allow it to dry at least 20 minutes before getting in the water.
Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes if you’re swimming or sweating and wear sunglasses to protect eyes from sun damage!
This is important and will bring you peace of mind. Know that if there’s an emergency, you can administer the life-saving procedure!
It’s also good practice to have your cell phone near by in case you have to call 911 for help.
Kids who don’t know how to swim or aren’t strong swimmers should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket! This not only will keep you afloat but easily saves lives in the process.
Additionally, the Red Cross recommends teaching children to always ask permission before going near a pool. This teaches kids that it isn’t safe to be by or enter water unless a parent is there supervising!
We want you to have as much fun as possible this Summer and every Summer to come! But first and foremost, safety is top priority.
We hope you can take valuable information from this and share it with someone you love!
