• 5 Popular Swimming Pool Myths – Busted!

As a Navarre Pool Expert, we often hear the popular myths about swimming pools. Do you wonder if they are true? Lets examine a few popular myths and separate truth from fiction!

#1: Chlorine will make blonde hair turn green

    Myth: False

Green hair is often associated with pool water, and blonde hair displays this best! But chlorine is not to blame. The green color comes from metals in the water which are added to control algae; it could also be from pool plumbing and fixtures. Hint:  Wear a swim cap! Experts also recommend thoroughly rinsing out your hair as soon as you leave pool and wash it soon after.

#2: Wait an hour after eating before you swim

    Myth: Mostly True

When your stomach is digesting food, blood goes to your stomach to aid in digestion leaving less blood in your other muscles. If you overwork those muscles while swimming they may cramp up but it’s not likely. To avoid it becoming a reality, be sure to eat lighter and ease back into swimming afterwards.

#3: The pool is clear so it must be clean

    Myth: False

Never trust a pool’s appearance, trust the chemistry. It’s very important that you have your pool water tested every week. Pay attention to the water chemistry to make sure there aren’t unhealthy levels of microorganisms. Our Pool Service in Navarre can help (850) 549-5315

#4: There’s too much chlorine in the pool, it smells!

    Myth: False

Actually, it’s quite the opposite. Chloramines are formed during the reaction of chlorine with sweat, body oils and urine, causing the smell. When you shock the pool these chloramines turn into oxygen and escape into the air. When you smell it in the air it means it’s not in the water doing its job and more chlorine needs to be added.

#5: Urine turns the pool blue

    Myth: False

This is one of the most popular and often joked about myths, but it’s just a scare tactic! Parents often use this reason to keep children from peeing in the pool but adults actually believe it, too. In reality, it just doesn’t happen!

The next time you hear these swimming pool myths you will know the real truth! As much as we wanted #5 to be true maybe we can keep that legend going anyway.
